Member Success Story: Ruth
What type of change did you make in your life? Or what goal did you set out to achieve? I have been an active member at the DAHLC since it first opened. In January of 2020 I set a goal to lose weight. I had tried losing weight on my own but was never very successful. This time I enrolled in the Boot Camp class and was committed to making this happen. This class brought changes for me, including more strength training since I was mostly doing cardio all the time. I have learned a lot about myself and what it takes to be successful.
What are some challenges you faced that elicited that change or that made you want to go for that goal? What barriers did you run into while pursuing your goal? One challenge I had to overcome was getting up at 5 am to attend class. I had never worked out in the early morning before. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it and have since changed my time of working out to early mornings most days. When Covid hit and the gyms closed, I tried staying active by attending the virtual classes. It was a challenge because the accountability aspect was gone but still it was better than working out on my own.
What are some factors that helped you make that change or that helped you achieve your goal? List any specific services you used at the DAHLC. Attending classes is key for me. I personally know I need to be held accountable and I really enjoy working out with other people. It is nice to see the same faces in class. I also appreciate the encouragement and expertise the training specialists offer. I attend the Strength and Endurance classes along with Kettle Bell and Suspension and cycle class faithfully.
What would you tell or encourage someone with who is in your old shoes and doesn’t know where to start? Anything in particular that inspired you throughout your journey? Just show up and start talking to the trainers and other members. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Show up at a class. Let the trainer know you are new to the class. They are all very knowledgeable and willing to help.
How does the future look different than it did before? I feel like I can try new activities and sports without injuring myself. I feel happier and healthier when staying active and eating right.
