What type of change did you make in your life? Or what goal did you set out to achieve? Approximately 8 years ago, at age 56, I started working out at the DAHLC with a goal to become healthier and improve my overall strength.
What are some challenges you faced that elicited that change or that made you want to go for that goal? What barriers did you run into while pursuing your goal? After many years of low or no physical activity, I did not feel very healthy and had gained too much weight.
Barriers in the beginning were to find time to exercise and a program that would improve my strength while minimizing injuries. The early morning classes were a good fit for me. I also began a low carb diet that helped me lose about 30 pounds in the first year.
What are some factors that helped you make that change or that helped you achieve your goal? List any specific services you used at the DAHLC. The instructors at the DAHLC, as well as the people in the classes are very motivating. I found the in-person classes to be the key for me. I now am addicted and cannot imagine a week without the DAHLC trainers and classmates. I began with the entry level classes and continued to advance. I really enjoyed each class and the great instructors - the strength classes are real standouts for me. I am currently in the barbell club classes with a plan to include more endurance and cardio.
What would you tell or encourage someone with who is in your old shoes and doesn’t know where to start? Anything in particular that inspired you throughout your journey? I would tell them that this has changed my life and they can do it too! I’d recommend setting up a schedule they can consistently achieve and tell them to just show up/never give up! I’d say that after one year of consistent training, they will not believe how good they will feel!
For me, the classes and people are the inspiration to show up and do your best. To have such a tremendous support group to look forward to each week is incredibly motivating! Also, the DAHLC instructors/trainers are exceptional and can help you develop in each stage of your journey.
How does the future look different than it did before? I am healthier than I have ever been and feel great! The cognitive benefits of exercise along with the strength gains cannot be understated. The DAHLC has improved my life beyond anything I could have imagined! Exercise is the key to my good health.
