What type of change did you make in your life, or what goal did you set out to achieve? I just chose to start lap swimming, an exercise I have done over many years, as swimming forced me to use more muscle groups. However, I didn't want to overtax my limits, so I just took it slow, performing a few repeats of 100 yards, and gradually my fitness returned. My blood sugar also improved almost right away, and so did my sleep.
What are some of the challenges you faced that elicited that change or made you want to go for that goal? What barriers did you run into while pursuing your goal? I am a survivor of three heart valve surgeries due to an anomaly at birth and was nearly put on insulin to help control my blood sugar levels. I was discouraged as I was not feeling very energetic despite watching my diet, living an active life, and being within the normal weight range.
What factors helped you make that change or helped you achieve your goal? List any specific services you used at the DAHLC. I use the pool at the DAHLC daily.
What would you tell someone in your old shoes who doesn't know where to start? Anything in particular that inspired you throughout your journey? Don't expect immediate results, and don't compare yourself with someone else. Be consistent. You can do this! Maybe you, too, could benefit from a little more rigor in your daily routine.
How does the future look different than it did before? My diabetes has been progressing for about the last 15 years. At times, it felt like it had a mind of its own. However, I now believe that I have a ray of hope that diabetes is something that I can manage.
