What type of change did you make in your life? I was always tired at the end of my day, and didn’t have energy to keep up with my little ones at home after work. I also didn’t like the fact that I had gained over 40 lbs in the last 4 years.
What are some challenges you faced that elicited that change or that made you want to go for that goal? I was starting grad school (a rigorous doctorate program) and I knew I had to develop some strong personal habits. I could barely take a flight of stairs without getting really short of breath. I got to the point, I was tired of being tired all the time.
What are some factors that helped you make that change or that helped you achieve your goal? I made exercise and good nutrition a priority. I started waking up an hour earlier so I can exercise before my day got busy. I also signed up for wellness coaching at the DAHLC, having this accountability with my coach Amy helped me stay consistent with my new habits. She guided me to the many resources available here at the DAHLC to help me reach my goals.
What would you tell or encourage someone with who is in your old shoes and doesn’t know where to start? I would tell them to set a specific goal and then make it a priority ever since day. Take small consistent steps.
How does the future look different than it did before? I am excited about the future! While working on my goal of losing weight, I discovered I love running, now I run every morning. I even started doing different races. Now I am training for a full marathon! I picture myself staying fit, and running marathon races for fun around the world.
