12 Habits: Family and Friends

Having close friends and family has far-reaching benefits for your health. A strong social supportEnjoy a little play 3 network can be critical to help you through the stress of tough times, whether you've had a bad day at work or a year filled with loss or chronic illness. Spending time with people helps ward off loneliness, gives you a sense of belonging, and increases your sense of self-worth. Family and friends can also encourage you to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Here are three ways you can have fun with family and friends this fall:

  • Eat together as a family. Family meals offer the potential to significantly influence children's behavior and development. Studies suggest that adolescents who share family meals have healthier eating habits and body weight, higher academic achievement, better psychological well-being, and lower risk of substance use and delinquency. Share a meal and conversation with family or friends 3 to 5 times a week!
  • Bring your family together for Mayo Clinic’s 5th Annual Heritage Classic 5K Run Walk at Soldiers Memorial Field at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 25. The event is open to all Mayo Clinic and MCHS employees, students, retirees, volunteers and their families. Click here to register!
