Wellness Champions play a vital role in supporting Mayo Clinic’s mission to promote lifestyle improvements that support good health and improve quality of life. A Wellness Champion is defined as a volunteer within a work area who promotes wellness initiatives through a variety of marketing, communication and implementation tactics. Because they know their co-workers, Champions are advantaged in motivating their colleagues to achieve healthier lifestyles. They act as both champions of wellness and catalysts for change, providing opportunities for their co-workers to increase their energy level, enjoy more productive workdays and ultimately feel better about themselves, in an engaging way. This month's Featured Wellness Champion is Glenda Mueller.

This Unsung Hero comes from Mayo Grad School Administration where she leads by example. Glenda climbs 35-40 flights of stairs each day to encourage her co-workers to take the stairs— no matter how busy she is, she makes the time to incorporate this into her routine. She also inspires others by being active in and outside of the workplace. She’ll even exercise while watching TV!

Aside from being physically active, this Wellness Champion sets the bar by cooking healthy cuisines, and making nearly everything from scratch. Her enthusiasm is starting to catch on in her work area. Her coworkers have commented that if they are about to eat something that is unhealthy, they think of her efforts and make better choices.  Glenda promotes overall health and well-being in her department. Most staff in her area are introverts, so finding ways to motivate people to take care of themselves, has been made possible because of Glenda’s creativity and hard work.
